China & Brazil preparing for the 2021 environmental COPs

The Conferences of the Parties (COPs) are the most important moment in global
environmental governance where political and public attention are turned to the issues of
climate change and biodiversity loss. From the 15th COP Climate negotiations in
Copenhagen to COP21 in Paris a lot has changed. Both the climate and the biodiversity
agendas have made significant advances, but, as recent joint reports by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-
Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) have shown, it becomes
ever more urgent for both topics to be discussed together in order to achieve crucial
synergies to meet both agendas.

Since Brazil’s hosting of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil has been an important actor
and partner for China in the sustainability agenda. The 2006 COP8 in Curitiba, Brazil was an
important milestone for putting cities on the biodiversity agenda. The Paris Agreement in
2015 managed to unite big emitters to commit to necessary emissions reductions, and has
had Brazil and China sign on to it as important emerging countries.

This year’s COP15 in Kunming, China is “the Paris moment for nature” where China’s recent
efforts in the concretizing ideas of an Ecological Civilization can be turned into effective
leadership. Under the slogan “Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on
Earth” the expected post-2020 biodiversity agenda will set new standards for “Living in
harmony with nature.

This webinar brings together experts from China and Brazil to discuss the current state,
challenges and perspectives in both issues of global governance of climate change and
biodiversity.

Prof. Wang Pu and Gu Baihe (Institutes of Science and Development, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS) will be debating with Prof. Leila da Costa Ferreira (NEPAM/UNICAMP) about the expected strategies and positions that China and Brazil will be presenting for their climate policies at next month’s COP26 in Glasgow.

Prof. Carlos Joly (IB/UNICAMP) and Prof. Zhang Yan (University of CAS) will be debating about legal and science-policy issues in both countries concerning biodiversity in this “super year for nature” and while the first big biodiversity conference, COP15 is taking palce in Kunming this week.
